Reading poems aloud..

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Quote from Roger Robinson

A lot of the appreciation of a poem has to with the readers specific orientation. Some people are more visually and narrative oriented, while others are music oriented. I find that I have to have some sonic experience of the poem while I’m writing. It took me a long time writing to realize that so much of a poems comprehension is wrapped up in sound. So now as I write I am often reading the poem aloud to check that some of the major strands of the poem like pacing and sound are on point. Sometimes I’ll get someone else to read it aloud to see if they stumble, or hear if lines don’t sound right in their mouths. I even have the annoying computer voice on my laptop read it out , just so that I can hear the poem without mine or others cultural compensation. But there is something else I’m listening for, and that is silence. So much can happen in white blank space that it has to be considered as valid a tool as sound. The reader can perceive epiphanies blank/ silent  space  can be an interesting metaphor for pain and much more. The silent space is part of the mystery of a poem and adds to the perception of the poem as a physical act being rendered from ones body. So try and use sound and silence in your next poem.
