Paul White & The Purple Brain

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

This album is based entirely around the music of ST Mikael, an incredible Swedish psych-rock artist who has been recording weird and wonderful records since the 1990s.

Mikael’s music is heavy on Eastern influences and otherworldly concerns, and ranges from searing electric guitar-led dirges to dreamlike ballads to ghostly atmospheric experiments. Sometimes all within the same song.

Paul White has reimagined and remoulded Mikael’s sounds, and added his own, to make an intriguing and mesmerising album that sounds unlike anyone else but him. It’s recognisably hip hop (just check ‘Marshen Signals’) but it’s psychedelic, spontaneous and free in a way that seems far from most definitions of the genre today. A fascinating album from a fascinating producer.

Stream the album below..

Head on over to http://paulwhite.bandcamp.com to purchase the album in digital format, £6 (or more) available in 320kbps MP3 or lossless FLAC

You can purchase a lovely environmentally-friendly arigato CD pack for just £10 too ! (includes free digi download aswell)

+ of course there is a pre-order for the 3 x 12″ version which also includes a Ltd 12″ with Guilty Simpson on Ancient Treasure plus two remixes by Paul White. All for just £15! Please note that the Ltd 12″ will NOT be available anywhere else…

Lee Perry & Adrian Sherwood – Dub Setter LP

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

via FACT…

Dub legend Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry will release a new album this year with slightly less insane dub legend Adrian Sherwood. Sort of.

Titled Dub Setter, the record is born from the same sessions as Perry’s Mighty Upsetter LP, featuring “radical reworkings” of tracks from that album, plus new material.

It’s also the first “full-on dub” album with Sherwood at the controls since his own Never Trust a Hippie, from 2003, though he is working on a dub project with the Bug. The press release promises “Sherwood operating at the peak of his rootical production powers, playing the studio to full soundbwoy effect as he draws on a vast range righteous musics from around the globe to create a conquering lion of earth-shaking psychedelic rhythm and sound that will delight any fan of the trademarked On-U style.”

Dub Setter was initially available as a Japan-only CD in early 2009, but this new version is available worldwide both CD and limited vinyl.

Blackdown interviews Kode 9.

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

B: In the last 5 years, we’ve seen a seismic shift in the accessibility of online music and podcasts/MP3 recordings are now one of, if not the primary medium to carry new musical ideas. To me it seems to form a continuum where podcasts sit at one end, where their financial value has tended to zero, their audio quality is low, they ignore copyright and their accessibility is potentially unlimited. At the other end of that scale you have a physical mix CDs, which have a financial cost, are high audio quality, and can’t be easily distributed unless digitized. Given they respect copyright (and therefore incur all the financial barriers that creates) and given so many regular(non-producer) music fans are fairly oblivious to audio quality, what
makes you want to invest time and ideas a mix CD in 2010?

Altered Natives – Tenement Yard

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Have you ever dreamed of a music that combines the DIY swagger of hardcore and grime with the swing of garage, the bump of UK funky, the ineffable jack-factor of house and the surgical precision of techno? Yeah? Me too. Well, here’s some good news: last week I took delivery of Tenement Yard, the new album from Altered Natives, and it looks as though our dream may have come true. – Kiran Sande / FACT Mag

Danny Native has put together this mix to showcase the tracks on his forthcoming album ‘Tenement Yard’.

Terror Danjah – Power Grid

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

via FACTmag

Cult grime hero Terror Danjah will return to Planet Mu this summer for a new double-pack vinyl EP for the label.

Reintroduced to the world at large by the extensive Gremlinz compilation for Mu last year, Terror – the man behind grime classics ‘Creepy Crawler’, ‘So Sure’ and more – has released singles for the Hyperdub and Butterz labels.

This new double EP promises to see Terror “swallow R’n’B and dubstep into his self-made matrix”, with tracks that also nod to 2step and rave.

Power Grid is scheduled for a July 12 release. Terror also has a new single due for Hyperdub, ‘Bruzin VIP’ (which features on Hyperdub boss Kode9’s forthcoming DJ-Kicks CD) backed with ‘Hysteria’, by D.O.K featuring Terror Danjah.

That will follow Hyperdub’s release from UK Funky duo Ill Blu, ‘Bellion’/’Dragon Pop’.

Tracklist:
1. Space Travelled
2. Menace
3. Pulse
4. Twisted
5. Power Grid
6. Upton Lane
7. Horror Story
8. Ride 4 Me

BRAiNMATH does this

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

via FACTmag

Ramp Recordings sister label Brainmath will follow its recent Brackles single (‘6am El Gordos’) with singles by Airhead and Bakongo, the first featuring a remix by Ostgut-Ton boss Nick Hoppner.

First up is Bakongo with the ‘Amhara’ 12”, then it’s time for Airhead. A production partner of James Blake’s, the pair’s recent joint single for the Brainmath label was superb, and now Airhead’s solo ambient jaunt ‘Paper Street’, which features on Scuba’s Sub:stance mix CD for Ostgut-Ton, gets a release. It’s backed with a remix by Hoppner, who we often talk about as one of the world’s most underrated producers.

Following that is Airhead’s full solo album, Empty 9-Volts. We have no audio, or even a tracklist, release date or artwork yet, but we will have soon (we’d wager release date for the LP will be in about three months’ time). Watch out for a full FACT feature on Airhead nearer the time – he’s someone we have high hopes for.
